History menu > The McCulloch collection > Victorian Art and ArtistsDisposal of the McCulloch Collection of Modern Art - master indexThis article has no connection with the Malvern Hills, other than you will find brief mention of pictures by Benjamin Williams Leader, who was born at Worcester, and painted a large picture of Worcester Cathedral. ContentsPictures sold at Christie's in 1909 Whistlers sold privately in 1909 Pictures sold at Christie's in 1911 Pictures sold at Christie's in 1913 OverviewAnother page refers to accounts in the Times newspaper which reported the sale of the more important works of art at Christie's in 1913. McCulloch's widow, who had next married Scottish painter James Coutts Michie, had in fact sold eleven pictures through Christie Manson and Woods in 1909 (ref 1), a further forty three lots in 1911 (refs 2, 3), with the majority (326 lots) being sold over three days in 1913 (refs 4, 5, 6), making 378 sold by Christie, Manson and Woods in all, (less two withdrawn). Two paintings by the American artist Whistler, who had died in 1903, appear to have been sold privately in 1909 to buyers in Detroit. At the RA winter exhibition at London in January 1909, 360 works including sculptures had been exhibited, but there were likely to have been some minor works which were not exhibited, and a few others which the family either did not sell or had gifted. Remember also that McCulloch may have sold paintings during his lifetime which would not have appeared in the RA catalogue. So it's possible McCulloch's total purchases may have approached 400 works. This compilation of the Times and Christie's Sale information includes a significant contribution from historian and author LR McCallum who as been researching the collection (ref 7), and from the Archives Department of Christie's, and we are most grateful for their assistance. You will see from the transcription below which artists commanded the highest prices. To simplify transcription the dimensions of the pictures are mostly quoted rounded down to the nearest inch. Sale at Christie's on 16th July 1909Eleven paintings were auctioned by Messrs Christie, Manson and Woods at 8 King Street, St James Square, London on Friday 16th July 1909. Here is a transcript of the sale:
The next day, on the 17th July 1909, The Times newspaper reported on the auction under the banner - Sale of Important Pictures. Here is a transcript of the paragraph about McCulloch's pictures:
Shortly after, newspapers reported the sale of a painting by Whistler to an American buyer, see below. It seems likely a private sale had been separately arranged by David Croal Thomson on behalf of McCulloch's widow. Private sale of Whistler's in 1909Englands lost pictureWHISTLER MASTERPIECE CROSSES THE ATLANTIC. (Daily Mail 23 July 1909) The 'Nocturne in Blue and Gold - Valparaiso' CL Freer of Detroit Buys a Whistler (American Art News 4 August 1909) Provenance: George McCulloch (1848-1907) had purchased between 1895-1897 then to Mrs George McCulloch, by bequest from her husband. Then to Wallis and Son, The French Gallery, London in 1909. From 1909 to 1919 owned by Charles Lang Freer (1854-1919) of Detroit, having been purchased from Wallis and Son, through dealer David Croal Thomson, in 1909. Whistler self portraitThe other picture by American artist James Abbott McNeill Whistler in the McCulloch collection was a self portrait - Portrait of the Painter, that is now in the Detroit Institute of Arts. This was apparently also sold privately in 1909. Description and Provenance: Oil on canvas, 29 x 21 in, circa 1872. Arrangement in Grey: Portrait of the Painter, signed above dado on left with butterfly (also signed with butterfly on frame). Half-length, body facing left, looking out at viewer, wearing round hat and grey painting jacket, holding two paintbrushes in right hand. Sold by Whistler to art collector Alexander Constantine Ionides for son Alexander; sold through Goupil’s to George McCulloch, London, July 1895; bequeathed to widow (later Mrs Coutts Michie), 12 Dec 1907; bought by Henry Glover Stevens, Detroit, 1909; bequeathed to Detroit Institute of Arts 1934. Henry Glover Stevens (1879 - 1934) was the son of wealthy businessman William Henry Stevens (1820 - 1901); the latter had discovered lead and silver ore and became a founder of Leadville in Colorado USA. Both men were philanthropists. Sale at Christie's on 29th April 1911Forty three paintings were auctioned by Messrs Christie, Manson and Woods at 8 King Street, St James Square, London on Saturday 29th July 1911. Here is a transcript of the sale:
A report on this sale appeared in The Times on 1st May 1911 under the banner - SALE OF MODERN PICTURES. Only the sale of the four most valuable pictures was highlighted, which were:
The Times then went on to report the sale of pictures 'thinly disguised as the property of a gentleman who has given up his London house.'
These latter pictures were probably not part of the McCulloch Collection - do you know who sold them? Sale at Christie's on May 23, 29, and 30, 1913The main sale by Christie, Manson and Woods, was held at London in 1913 over three days. The auction catalogue was described: 'Catalogue of the well-known collection of modern pictures and water colour drawings of the British and continental schools, statuary and bronzes formed by the late George McCulloch, Esq, of 184 Queen's Gate, SW'

We wondered if this information had come from either the British art agent Robert Holden (1956 - 2014), whose obituary was published in the Daily Telegraph on 5th October 2014, or his company Robert Holden Ltd, now trading as Omnia Art Ltd. Here is a transcription based on the Australian copy of the Christie's sale catalogue, annotated with purchaser's surname and price, and a book named 'Art Prices Current 1912-1913', edited by G Ingram Smyth and published by the Fine Art Trade Journal.
